Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a regenerative joint injection technique used to repair tendons and ligaments.  At Companion Animal Wellness Center, prolotherapy is one of the holistic veterinary services we offer through our integrative veterinary medicine approach.  It is an orthopedic procedure that stimulates the healing process to strengthen and repair injured and painful joints. When a tendon or ligament is injured, the stressed joint is destabilized and the increased movement causes pain. Prolotherapy injections traditionally are made of a slightly irritating solution of dextrose, saline and procaine, however, the type of injection varies by practitioner and condition treated.

Prolotherapy works by stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanism to lay down new collagen tissue in a weakened area, and permanently stabilizes the joint. The injection causes a mild inflammatory response, which tricks the body into directing blood flow and healing factors to the injection site. With repeated injections, these joints become stronger and results in increased stability to the joint.  Studies using prolotherapy on back pain in humans showed that it was as successful or better than back surgery in patients.

Prolotherapy treats:

  • back and neck pain

  • degenerative disc disease

  • low back instability

  • knee pain such as ACL tears and patellar luxations

  • arthritis, shoulder, wrist, ankle, and hip pain

Please feel free to schedule a consultation with us to see if prolotherapy is an appropriate option for your pet.
