Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy is on the leading edge of regenerative medicine, and is one of the holistic services offered here at Companion Animal Wellness Center where our integrative veterinary approach combines traditional and holistic veterinary medicine. Regenerative medicine is a therapy that enables the body to repair and regenerate damaged tissue. Stem cells use an animals own healing cells that naturally exist in their fat tissue. In published clinical trials to reduce pain and lameness, it was proven that 90 days after treatment, 80% of dogs showed improved quality-of-life. In addition, 62% of dogs discontinued or reduced the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and 85% of owners would recommend the procedure.
Stem cells are unspecialized cells that are capable of renewing themselves through cell division. Unspecialized cells are cells that have not yet been directed by the body to become a specific type of cell. Stem cells serve as an internal repair system for the body and are used by organs to replace damaged or dead cells. Stem cells are easily collected from the fat of our pets using a simple surgical procedure. Once stem cells are injected back into the affected joint, they work by blocking pain signals, reducing inflammation, and stimulating cellular regeneration. This therapy is most commonly used to treat osteoarthritis in dogs and cats. The areas of the hip and the knee are the joints most frequently treated. Other uses for this therapy are ligament and tendon injuries, as well as spinal cord injuries. We have seen great success using stem cell therapy in many canine and feline patients. Please contact CAWC for more information on stem cell therapies and if it may be right for your pet.
